This full-day workshop will teach you how to safely and effectively use tools that are often found at home. Using locally milled wood, we will create our own versions of a milk stool, a simple three-legged stool that has many uses around the home and was traditionally used on dairy farms. Students will be given a design framework to make a functional stool while also having opportunities to incorporate their own artistic choices such as wood species, leg shape, seat shape, wedge orientation, and finish. This course will focus on understanding best practices for using the power drill, circular saw, and the band saw. In addition, a variety of hand tools and basic woodworking principles will be introduced including measuring and marking, shop habits, and how to use simple tools well, such as hand saws, clamps, and more.
Becca Levi grew up sailing and exploring the shores of the Westport River and Buzzards Bay. She is currently a PK-8 woodworking teacher at Dedham Country Day School and works as a deckhand on the Schooner Valora in the summers, in addition to sailing with her family on sailboats big and small. Her journey as a woodworker began at the Colorado College 3D Arts shop under mentor Andy Tirado, continuing on to work at the sculpture shop at Columbia University, in framing and finish carpentry in Newport RI for a small contractor, and doing odd jobs at the many vegetable farms she has worked on. Becca is passionate about woodworking as a tool for change. When not in the shop, she can be found sailing, rock climbing, hiking, skiing or bicycling.
