Volunteer Opportunities

Docents and Educators

The Volunteer Infrastructure Intern acts as an assistant to the Volunteer Manager. Responsibilities may include volunteer tracking, recruitment, aiding in creating a volunteer newsletter, designing and distributing marketing materials and assisting with miscellaneous special projects. This position requires minimal physical exertion but may involve some walking, lifting, and time outside in all weather conditions. The ideal candidate would have effective project management skills, ability to multitask, excellent communication skills, initiative, drive, creative flair and flexibility and a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and design software. The internship position would take place during the winter semester with a commitment of one or two days a week. The position is unpaid.

Volunteers will guide visitors through the Museum, which contains exhibits, photographs and memorabilia related to the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company; and through the America’s Cup Hall of Fame, which has many artifacts and information on the America’s Cup competition. Docents escort small and large groups, including school groups, and often work together conducting tours.


Museum Store Assistant

The Museum’s gift shop is adjacent to the admissions area and is a lively and interesting place to work. Working in the gift shop provides an opportunity to meet visitors from all over the world. The volunteer would assist the gift shop manager with sales and inventory and help maintain the appearance of the store.

Some knowledge of computers is helpful but not essential. The gift shop has an easy-to-use scanning system. Training will be provided on an individual basis.
 


Admissions Desk Assistant

The Admissions Desk Assistant is the first person people meet when they come into the Museum. The person at the desk greets and admits visitors, takes in admissions fees, and provides a general overview of the Museum. The Admissions Desk Assistant has the opportunity to meet visitors from all over the world.

Volunteers must be friendly and like to work with the public. Comfort with computers is helpful for the admissions process. Training is available on an on-going basis for both for groups and at the individual level.
 


Office Assistant

The Museum office is located on the second floor of the main Museum building. Although the Museum is open from May through the end of October, the office is open year-round.  The volunteer would assist in general office work such as answering phones, filing, assisting in mailings, etc.

Good telephone manners and comfort in working with the public are essential. Some knowledge of computers is desirable. Training is available at the individual level.
 


Grounds Assistant

The Museum has several gardens which would appreciate some tender loving care throughout the summer months. Volunteers should have some experience in garden planning and maintenance. Museum staff would assist with heavy work such as bed preparation and watering, but the volunteer would be responsible for planting, weeding and pruning.
