Spring Appeal, 2023
Over 250 visitors of all ages gathered to celebrate the start of our 52nd season on Opening Day. As the weather warms, we're gearing up for an exciting summer on the water. Before setting sail, I want to reflect on the vital work we do at the Herreshoff Marine Museum.
Our mission extends beyond preserving the legacy of the Herreshoff family. We are a center of learning and inspiration for people of all ages. Our Youth Education Program is especially important in today's educational landscape. Only 26.6% of high school students meet or exceed expectations in Math, and only 30.7% do so in Science, according to the Rhode Island Department of Education. Through hands-on activities and real-world experiences, we nurture STEM skills and introduce young people to sailing, boatbuilding, and marine science. Our program teaches teamwork, problem-solving, and environmental stewardship, inspiring the next generation of leaders in the Blue Economy.
Currently, two diverse groups of ten students each are building boats in our shop. One group from Highlander Charter School is constructing a Tenderly sailing dinghy as part of a Marine Trade Exploration Program, while the other group from Middletown High School is building a Cape Cod Frosty as part of a credit recovery program. In partnership with RIMTA, we have trained over 360 youth in boatbuilding over the past six years, with 35% being female and 38% BIPOC.
None of this would be possible without the support of donors like you. Your donations help us acquire equipment, maintain facilities, hire the best instructors, and offer scholarships and financial aid to students in need.
