Museum Launches Exciting Fall Boatbuilding and Marine Industry Exploration Program for High School Students

The Museum, in collaboration with The Rhode Island Marine Trades Association and supported by the Governor's Workforce Board Real Skills for Youth grants, is thrilled to announce its upcoming fall after-school program, inviting all high school students to dive into the world of boatbuilding and marine industry exploration.

Designed for students with an interest in the marine industry, this program offers a unique opportunity to explore potential careers, acquire academic and employment skills, and gain valuable hands-on experience. Participants will broaden their horizons by delving into boat design, boatbuilding, carpentry, tool use, sail making, composites, and essential 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication, planning, and goal setting.

The program aims to raise awareness among young individuals about the multitude of career pathways available within the marine industry. It seeks to inform them about the skills sought by industry employers, making them well-prepared for future opportunities.

Throughout the 10-week program, students will have the chance to engage with industry guest speakers, embark on enlightening tours, and participate in classroom and shop activities. They will also receive insights into post-secondary education options that align with the skillsets highly valued by marine industry employers.

The fall boatbuilding program commences on October 17th, with only 10 coveted spots available for participation. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM and Fridays from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. In addition to this enriching experience, participants have the potential to earn stipends of up to $1,200.
