Position Description: HMM is looking for virtual volunteers (both transcribers and reviewers) to remotely assist us with collecting and transcribing information about HMCo. employees from publicly available digitized archival sources, like historic newspapers and census records. Though the Herreshoff historical record is unusually complete for a manufacturing company or shipyard from its era, employee records represent one of the major gaps across Herreshoff collections. In 2025 we would like to start correcting this, and start doing a better job telling the stories of the thousands of people who worked at HMCo. over nearly seven decades of operations.
Timing: this is a flexible volunteer position that can happen on your own schedule, though some regularly scheduled training/check in meetings will be required. We are hoping to find folks who might be willing to spend at least 2-3 hours a week on this project (though welcome anyone who wants to dedicate more time!).
Required skills: high level of attention to detail, willingness to work collaboratively, excellent typing skills, computer and internet access, the ability to read cursive, familiarity/comfort using Zoom for training and check-in meetings
Preferred, but not required: familiarity with Excel, comfort editing shared documents, experience with historical research and/or genealogical research

If you enjoy detail-oriented historical sleuthing and are interested in learning more about volunteering for this project, please email [email protected] with “HMCo. Employee Project” in the subject line. In the email, feel free let us know a little about why you are interested and describe any relevant experience you may have.
We hope to hear from you!
