Introduction to Marlinspike Seamanship

Join us for an introductory lesson in marlinspike seamanship! In this afternoon workshop you will learn traditional splicing, whipping and rope grommet making with three strand Manila and/or cotton line. We will also discuss the history of traditional rope making and use of fancy knot work onboard vessels, and look at a few examples of relevant artifacts from the collection. All necessary materials, supplies and instructions will be provided. You will take home your own samples created in class and instructional hand outs, as well as a resource list and additional material to practice on at home.

This workshop is for adults 18+ and is limited to 12 participants. A Minimum of 6 students is required to run the workshop. Class will be held on the Herreshoff Marine Museum campus in the historic HMCo. shop buildings.
