Between 1893 and 1937 hundreds of Norwegian sailors crewed on the yachts that defended the America’s Cup. Many of these yachts were designed by N.G. Herreshoff and built at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company.

In the words of Olin Stephens "The Norwegians were obviously very good sailors, and as most of our America’s Cup defenders were crewed by Norwegians, one can say that it wasn't the Americans who won the Cups......it was the Norwegians!"*

This is their story.

Juan E. Corradi is chairman emeritus of the Seamanship Committee at the New York Yacht Club. He is professor emeritus of sociology at New York University. An avid ocean sailor, he has crossed the Atlantic four times on his sailboat. From 2004 through 2010 he cruised the North Sea and the Baltic, sailing beyond the Arctic Circle in North Norway.
