Yachting historian Steven Tsuchiya will tell the fascinating story of the founding of the America’s Cup yacht race and the lives and times of its chief visionaries, John Cox Stevens and George L. Schuyler. Most of the content will reflect his new book, “America’s Cup Deed of Gift and Related Documents,” published by the Herreshoff Marine Museum. Steve’s book is the first comprehensive anthology of the America’s Cup’s foundational documents. It features high-resolution images of the three versions of the Deed of Gift (the purpose and rules of the contest), petitions and orders of judicial amendments, Schuyler’s letters describing the founders’ intent, and much more. You may buy a copy of the book in advance at the Herreshoff Marine Museum’s online store; all proceeds go to the Museum.
R. Steven Tsuchiya is a yachting historian and Chairman of the Selection Committee of the America’s Cup Hall of Fame. An authority on the history of the America’s Cup, Steve is a co-author of “Winging It: Oracle Team USA’s Incredible Comeback to Defend the America’s Cup” (McGraw-Hill 2013), and his newest book is “America’s Cup Deed of Gift and Related Documents” (Herrehoff Marine Museum, 2024). Steve is also committed to preserving and sharing yachting history through museums. He is a member of the Museum Collections Committee of the Herreshoff Marine Museum and the exhibit design team of The Sailing Museum. With fellow yachting historian Robert Kamins, Steve edits an online, annotated, searchable bibliography of over 900 books related to the America’s Cup on CupInfo.com. Steve is a member of the New York Yacht Club where he serves on four committees (America’s Cup, Library, Fine Arts, and Communications). He races Flying Scot boats on Cowan Lake in Wilmington, Ohio.
