No Detail Too Fine: Small Craft Stories from Rhode Island's Herreshoff Manufacturing Co.

A Gallery Talk by HMM Curator Evelyn Ansel

at the Audrain Automobile Museum on June 2nd at 6:00 PM

The Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. built some of the Gilded Age’s most competitive and elegant yachts in Bristol, RI between 1878 and 1944. While HMCo. was particularly renowned for their large America’s Cup defenders and luxurious steam yachts, the company also built hundreds of dinghies and tenders that were just as meticulously designed and constructed as their trophy-winning counterparts.

The three Herreshoff boats on display in the Audrain's new “Wonders in Wood” exhibit are perfect examples of how the HMCo. dedication to speed and excellence extended even to the smallest details on their littlest vessels as well as the intertwined histories of two of the most iconic yacht and automobile manufacturers in history.

Please join our friends at the Audrain Museum as they welcome our Curator to discuss the history of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. and explore the Herreshoff legacy through the lens of small craft and their relationship to some of the most iconic automobiles of that era.
