The Bristol Phoenix speculates about the 1895 America's Cup Defender, DEFENDER (HMCo. #452), and publishes a poem poking fun at the secrecy surrounding the vessel and alluding to the public's curiosity. Note also the possible SEVEN BROTHERS connection in the advertisement to the left of the poem for Church brothers fertilizer!

The Phoenix reports that HMCo. Fire Department is in its final stages of organization. Head sailmaker Asa Hathaway is the “Chief Engineer,” two hose companies consisting of HMCo. employees have been formed, and rules & regulations and badges have been developed.
