Mud Pattens

A tutorial from Small Boats Monthly for making your own mud pattens

Check out this how-to on making “mud pattens” from WoodenBoat Magazine's Small Boats Monthly editor Chris Cunningham! Think snowshoes for the mud, perfect for the spring thaw. If you have a shop at home and a little bit of time, you might consider incorporating these into your social-distance-outside routine.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE FROM CHRIS regarding safety: If you encounter mud that is so soft that the pattens begin to sink, retreat to firmer ground. Larger pattens may work, but it’s possible that the mud is too soft to be traversed safely. Given my experience getting stuck with my jury-rigged splatchers, I’d advise carrying a knife and extra lacing lines.
