Reliance was Nat Herreshoff's fourth America's Cup defender design, built with extreme sail area and dramatic overhangs. The sheer overhang of the bow and stern took advantage of a loophole in the contemporary '90-foot' rule, so that heeled over her waterline length (and therefore her speed) increased dramatically. Reliance was an early pure racing yacht, unfinished below decks with frames left exposed. Her massive sail plan was the equivalent of eight 12 meter class yachts. Reliance measured 201 feet from tip to tip with a mast that towered to the height of a 20-story building. Her total sail area was around 17,000 square feet.
