The Herreshoff Institute Seamanship Program

The mission of the Herreshoff Institute Seamanship program is to teach safety, seamanship, and the principles of sailing, with the goal of promoting responsibility, accountability and self-reliance on the water.

Adult and Youth Summer Sessions

The Herreshoff Institute offers its Seamanship Program to adults and youth age 9 to 17. The focus of instruction is strongly influenced by the Herreshoff tradition of excellence. Its scope includes the principles of sailing, navigation, weather, maintenance, seamanship, and safety. The primary aim of the program is to develop a true appreciation for boating by respecting the practical aspects offered to us through history. The skills learned now can be used and appreciated for a lifetime. Students enjoy learning the principles of sailing in the historic Herreshoff 12 1/2's, as well as the 1929 Fishers Island 31 KESTREL, and the adults will experience the thrill and the power of the historic S Boats. The Herreshoff Institute maintains a 4:1 ratio of students to instructors. The instructors are well trained in the principles of seamanship, respect for the water, safety, and how to have fun.

The Adult Program is limited to 20 students, ages 18 and older.
The Youth Program is limited to 28 students, ages 9-12, and 28 students, ages 13-17.

Each student must wear a Coast-Guard-approved life jacket whenever he/she is on a boat or on the docks. Those enrolled must supply their own Coast-Guard-approved life jacket (Type III or "vest" style life jackets typically offer the best support and comfort).
