Stanley
Z. Rosenfeld
Renowned marine photographer and chronicler Stanley
Z. Rosenfeld began at an early age to assist his father,
Morris Rosenfeld, in marine photography. Stanley worked
both in the field and in the darkroom. From an early
age, he drove the Rosenfeld chase boat, FOTO. In WWII,
Stanley became a combat photographer in the Pacific.
Upon Morris' death in 1968, Stanley continued the
business, but in 1981 he closed the studio, putting
their unique collection of images in storage, until
it was purchased by Mystic Seaport in 1984.
Not only was Stanley the preeminent yacht photographer
of his time, but also he was a notable author on the
subject of the America's Cup competition. Stanley
worked tirelessly to assemble and preserve the family's
photographic and written legacy of the Cup.
The history of the America's Cup owes a debt of gratitude
to the legendary Rosenfelds, whose zeal and passion
for great sailing photography has produced some of
the most remarkable photographic images of boats under
sail, particularly those of the America's Cup. Even
more impressive is the comprehensive and meticulous
nature of the collection, a photographic history that
provides pictorial documentation of the America's
Cup competition from the turn of the century to the
present day.
